About Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLDS Exhibit

The Chess Player

Throughout the ages, medical scholars have endeavored to understand how our bodies function through exploration of real human specimens. Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS exhibits, experienced internationally by nearly 25 million people, take this tradition one step further by presenting a new look at the human body.

Using the groundbreaking process of plastination, BODY WORLDS 1 makes public what was before only available to medical professionals. By showcasing nearly 200 real human specimens and more than 20 whole-body plastinates, visitors can better understand the intricacies, vulnerabilities and wonders of the human body.

This fascinating exhibit allows visitors to:

  • Experience anatomy system by system, which aids understanding of the independent functions of each and how they fit within the body. Compare healthy and diseased organs – such as a healthy liver to one showing hepatocirrhosis and non-smokers lungs to smokers lungs.
  • Appreciate these systems in life-like poses, which illustrates how our bodies are structured and how they function during everyday activities.

The Body Worlds Exhibit opens at the Milwaukee Public Museum January 18, 2008. Click on the links in the sidebar for more info.
